2006 Youth Work Camp Plans

by Erick Olsen

In July of 2006, we will be traveling with the Youth Group from our church to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to take part in a week-long Work Camp to help some of the residents of that city.

This is our church’s first year in a Work Camp with Old First Reformed Church Urban Work Camps (http://www.oldfirstucc.org) We expect that we will work in soup kitchens, homeless shelters, urban gardens, transitional homes, and thrift stores — all as part of Urban Work Camp’s plan to expose people to urban poverty and provide life-changing opportunities for service to others.

We also anticipate that this year’s group will build on the success of the last two years. We will work hard, learn some practical hands-on skills, have fun with our friends and strengthen the bonds that grow from working in a group. But most importantly, we will step outside of our own lives for a short time, and improve the life of someone who has so little - and we will make new friends in the people we serve. One former volunteer writes that Urban Work Camp is “where eyes are opened, hearts are deepened, and new relationships are forged. This is where real change will come from.”

This trip costs roughly $325 per person (including transportation, room, board, program costs, etc.). In addition to the group fundraisers we will do, we are selling shares of $25 to offset the trip costs. Please consider purchasing a share to sponsor a specific youth or the group in general. If you choose to buy a share, please complete the form on the adjacent page and return it with a check payable to “Church of Christ” to Church of Christ, P0 Box 582, Norfolk, CT 06058. Or, contact a young person who will be attending to sponsor them.

Those who purchase shares will receive a postcard during our trip as well as an invitation to our thank-you dinner (to be held in the fall).

Thank you for helping us to help others!
